Who are we?
The Animal Rescue and Protection Society, Inc. (TARPS) opened its doors in the Fall of 2000. Located in Chester Vermont, TARPS is a nonprofit. We are manned solely by volunteers as a no kill shelter. Our funding is by the generous donations of people and businesses in our local and state-wide community.
When a few concerned volunteers came together over a decade ago, to save a healthy abandoned dog from being euthanized, they didn’t realize they were setting the foundation for a shelter that has rescued hundreds of animals from similar fates. What began as a network of foster homes, expanded with the donation of the use of a trailer and property. Once there, they established their mission and incorporated.
Over time, and with the support of the businesses and people of the community, we have evolved into the rescue organization we are today. For over 10 years we have had a regular staff of volunteers committed to our mission. Our veterinarian has worked with us since we first opened the doors. We are home to the area’s animal control officers. Our adopters frequently return for their next pets.
Cage-free Facility
Most of our animals are not caged. They are in sunny rooms where they are allowed to play and relax with other cats. They have access, via pet door, to a safe, fenced-in outdoor area. Cages are used for sick and recuperating cats in our sick bay and for moms with litters. Occasionally cats will be caged in the open rooms for an adjustment period, much as you would do when you introduce an adoptee to your home. Born-in-the-wild (feral) cats may be caged, for safety and access, during a rehabilitation period.
Two rooms are for all-age, healthy adoptable cats. We have a feral sanctuary for cats too shy to be in with the general population. Everyone’s favorite place is the kitten room, where we can watch the young ones scamper and play.
In Touch With the Community
In keeping with our mission, we often hold events to keep the public informed. Please check our calendar to see if we will be in your area.
If you’d like for us to speak with your class or organization about our shelter, volunteer opportunities or how to help keep the animals in your home or community healthy, please don’t hesitate to call us at the shelter (802-875-7777).
