Our Adoption Process
FOREVER Homes
Thank you for considering adopting one of our animals. Adoption is a big decision. We appreciate you coming to TARPS to find your pet.
Choosing Your Pet
Check our petfinder or Petango or adopt-a-pet pages for photos and a brief description of our cats. Note whether they have special needs* or if they get along with children and other pets. Come in when the shelter is open or make an appointment to visit with the cats. Our shelter director and volunteers will be happy to assist you in choosing the best pet for you and your family.
Unlike some shelters, the people here know the cats. Volunteers are encouraged to play with and become aware of each cat’s personality and specific needs.
Our Animals
Our animals are healthy and regularly examined by a local vet. They are given whatever initial care is needed, necessary shots and spayed or neutered when they are of age. They are also temperament tested to be sure they can be placed with a family.
What Happens Next?
You will fill out an adoption application. It will ask for your info plus whatever history you may have with pets and pet care. We also ask for vet and personal references. The application includes important information on what is expected of you from TARPS and the state of Vermont.
Once your references are checked and approved, we ask for an adoption donation of $100 for kittens up to 6 mo.; $85 for a cat 6 mo. to 3 years; Cats over 3 years price is to be determined by TARPS. The donation helps defray the vetting expenses.
Bring Your Pet Home!
On pick-up day, you will pay your adoption fee, and be given your new pet’s medical records and some pet care information.
If you have your own pet carrier, bring it along to transport your new family member home. If not, let us know, and you can purchase a cardboard carrier.
You Aren’t Alone
Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you have before, during or after your adoption. There are no unimportant questions. We understand what it takes to adjust to a new pet. We are pet owners ourselves. Our number is (802) 875-7777.
