Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It’s important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It’s the way in which we ourselves grow and develop.

Last night we attended Green Mountain Union High School’s Class of 2017 Service Learning Project Evening. The evening was the culmination of many hours of volunteer work with TARPS and other local organizations here in the Chester area. The project is an annual opportunity for the 7th grade class to work within the community to provide volunteer service to many organizations.
The project requirements were:
- To provide at least 10 hours of service
- A contract between the volunteer and the organization
- Keep a time log to verify their hours
- To keep a journal, which provides some reflection on the experience
- To conduct and interview to gather information about the organization and the students impact
- Take photographs of the experience
- Write a paper describing their experience
- Present a 3 minute speech
- Design a display highlighting the experience
It was exciting to have five students helping us out this year. These student volunteers worked to socialize many of our cats and kittens. Additionally they were a big help with many of our day-to-day tasks. Our students made a great impact in our little shelter.
Last night, all the final displays were wonderful. We brought one of our small litters for the students to share with attendees. One of our students volunteered to do their presentation to a room full of community members.
Very proud of what they accomplished here, we extend our gratitude for their service. They are welcome to come back to visit, or volunteer, any time. We hope their experience here is only the beginning of many years of service to their community.
